The new SF restaurant openings you should know about.


If you tried to keep track of every new restaurant and bar in San Francisco, your head might spin. So just read this list instead. These are the openings that seem like they have the most potential. Although, keep in mind, we make no promises about the places we haven't visited yet. Go forth and be a pioneer—or just keep up with our Hit List to see which new restaurants we checked out and loved.

Missing out on great, new restaurants and bars keeps us awake at night, so we're always researching spots. Here you'll find every new opening from the past three months that caught our eye. While we haven’t visited them all yet, once we do, we’ll give you our honest review. Those we love will make it onto the Hit List.

North Beach

At this North Beach bar, you can play Pac-Man, arcade basketball, and Skee-Ball while digging into a spread of tacos and burritos. Wash it all down with a cocktail or shot-and-beer combo.

The Flour + Water Pizzeria team has opened a spot in Mission Rock, with whole pies, soft serve, and their fantastic mozzarella sticks. This outpost also has slices, boozy slushies, and an exclusive dish: garlic fries with cacio e pepe dipping sauce.

This Mission bar is from the people behind local amaro brand Brucato Amaro. Their liqueurs feature heavily on their cocktail menu, but they also have small plates like chicken fat-fried fingerlings, burrata with kumquat calabrian chili crisp, and spaghetti alla bottarga.

German street food has landed in Uptown Oakland. Black Forest Kitchen serves Berlin-style döner kebab in sandwich or salad form (they also have a plant-based version).

Draymond Green has opened Meski, an Afro-Latin Ethiopian restaurant in Lower Nob Hill. The menu (by the chef behind Alamar) serves dishes like bebere-cured salmon with aguachile and suya-spiced hanger steak. Expect a buzzy atmosphere with green velvet couches, multiple floors, and plenty of cocktails.

The former Sunset Reservoir Brewing is now Fifty Vara, a multi-level brewery and restaurant. To go with house beers or cocktails, they have flatbreads, a burger, and small plates like seasonal toasts and calamari.

Cheezy’s Artisan Pizza is the latest addition to Saluhall. They’re doing Neapolitan and grandma-style pies, with toppings ranging from classic margherita to lamb merguez with halloumi and walnut muhammara.

Find SF’s first location of Leo’s (originally based out of LA) parked on the Great Highway. The taco truck specializes in al pastor, but they also have other meat options to fill up burritos, tortas, quesadillas, and huaraches.

Just Added

Flora King is an Argentinian restaurant in the Castro serving empanadas, milanesa, and salads. They also have a few pizzas on the menu, with topping combinations like mushrooms and bacon or goat cheese and blueberries.

Pho De Nguyen is a San Bruno-based Vietnamese restaurant that just expanded to SoMa. The casual spot serves phở and other noodle soups, plus vermicelli, rice plates, imperial rolls, and more.

The Fillmore's newest bakery is KC Paris, a French spot with croissants, macarons, and chocolate chip caramel Speculoos cookies. In the savory department, expect quiches, croque monsieurs, and steak and chorizo pizzas.

Another dessert spot has arrived on Irving Street. Holy Crepe makes sweet and savory crepes with a range of fillings, from pepperoni pizza and tom yum to strawberry cheesecake and classic Nutella and strawberry. They also serve ice cream and boba.

Yet another place for crepes is Oishii Matcha, a Castro dessert shop that also does soft serve, croffles, and boba sundaes. In addition to matcha and hojicha drinks, they have frappes and coffee.

Joining the ranks of SF’s two-word restaurants starting with “Dumpling” is Dumpling King. The Chinese restaurant in the Richmond serves pan-fried, boiled, and steamed bao, plus honey walnut prawns, orange chicken, beef with bitter melon, and more for entrees.

We checked out Dumpling King and added it to the Hit List.

Crazy Block Cheesecakes is a Lakeshore spot that serves tons of different cheesecakes (including a banana and vanilla bean one called banilla), latkes, loaded fries, BBQ, and mac and cheese.

Indigo is a Marina cocktail bar and restaurant that’s open until 11pm most nights (and midnight on weekends). The menu includes a range of American dishes like a wagyu smashburger, polenta and mushrooms, and a pink peppercorn caesar.

Aydea has opened a second SF location in the Richmond (the first is in SoMa). Avenues dwellers can now get their hands on Tatar specialties like borscht, cottage cheese pancakes, and uchpuchmak filled with potato, onion, and beef or mushroom.

Taqueria Colibri is a casual offshoot of Colibri in the Presidio, operating out of the same space. Order at the window for carne asada, carnitas, or al pastor tacos on fresh tortillas.

A massive Korean food hall has landed in the Serramonte Center in Daly City. The 75,000 square foot space includes a sit-down restaurant, bars, a grocery store, street food carts, and more.

The old Yellow Moto Pizzeria space in the Mission is now Anatolian Table. The Turkish restaurant serves kebaps, lahmacun, and pide topped with sujuk.

This Mission bar and restaurant (in the old Monk’s Kettle space) serves beer, cocktails, wine, and food—think buffalo wings, carrot miso risotto, and pimento cheese dip—until midnight daily.

B. Patisserie’s legendary kouign amann have landed in Union Square. This is the bakery’s second location in the city—swing by for flaky croissants, seasonal cakes, and other French pastries.

Prescott Market is a food hall in West Oakland with local restaurants and bars—during their soft open, vendors include Woo Can Cook, Pizzeria Violetta, and Almanac Beer Co. There’s plenty of picnic table seating both indoors and outdoors.

This food truck known for its cheesesteak egg rolls and maximalist loaded fries, rice bowls, and hoagies just opened a brick-and-mortar in the Dimond District. Head there for steak and shrimp fries, garlic lemon pepper wings, and more.

Chicken noodle soup enthusiasts around the city will be happy to know that Turtle Tower is back. The Vietnamese restaurant, which was closed for two years, has a new FiDi location with the same menu, plus a few Hanoi street food additions.

We checked out Turtle Tower and added it to the Hit List.

Perfect For:Brunch

Thai and Australian brunch dishes are on the menu at Rise & Set. The Nob Hill restaurant serves dishes like crying tiger sandwiches, tartines with mushrooms or smoked salmon, and thai tea toast.

Potto is a Japanese restaurant in the Castro specializing in shabu shabu with fillings including wagyu, pork belly, and snow crab. In addition to hot pot, there’s also udon, yakiniku don, and hamachi kama.

This national matcha cafe chain just opened its first SF location in SoMa. They have matcha lattes with mango, strawberry, and taro, plus matcha cold brew, hojicha, and fruit teas.

Arsicault’s fantastic almond, chocolate, and ham and cheese croissants have landed in Mission Rock. This is the French bakery’s third outpost in the city after Civic Center and the original in the Richmond.

We checked out Arsicault and added it to the Hit List.

Seasonal French dishes like local shellfish à la marinière, octopus hot dogs, and a croque monsieur are on the menu at Caché. The Sunset restaurant serves brunch, lunch, and dinner, with plenty of wine on deck.

We checked out Caché and added it to the Hit List.

FEBRUARY

Potrero Hill has another coffee shop in Progeny Coffee. The menu of Colombian coffee drinks include drip, blueberry lattes, and other espresso drinks—and to eat, there are pastries by The French Spot and Eli Deli.

The former Auntie April’s space in Bayview is now Smoke Soul Kitchen, a soul food spot serving brunch and breakfast. Expect dishes like sweet creme pancakes, shrimp and grits, and smothered chicken.

Hyphy Burger is a West Oakland smashburger spot with a simple menu: two kinds of burgers and fries. They also have a bunch of milkshake flavors, from Fruity Pebbles and Oreo to Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Turquaz is a Turkish spot in SoMa with plenty of seating. The counter-service spot serves everything from meze and kofte bowls to grilled lamb chops and beyti kebab. For dessert, the pastry case is full of baklava, cakes, and other pastries.

We checked out Turquaz and added it to the Hit List.

Perfect For:Eating At The Bar

Shoji is a SoMa Japanese cafe (with a bar and restaurant coming soon) with a menu of matcha and espresso drinks. There are tons of booths and bar seating for anyone slowly sipping on a matcha einspänner or seasonal cold brew mocktail.

Another Bob’s Donuts has opened a block away from their Nob Hill location (they plan to move operations to this newer outpost after the original's lease is up). Expect the same gigantic apple fritters and classic donuts.

This Noe Valley seafood counter has landed in Rockridge Market Hall (in the old Hapuku Fish Shop space). In addition to fresh seafood, they also have prepared dishes like poke bowls and clam chowder.

Perfect For:Breakfast

The city has another bagel shop: Bageletto in the Mission. Their bagels are available in bulk with schmears, or you can get sandwiches with lox, turkey and bacon, or a muffuletta-inspired combination with soppressata, mortadella, and provolone.

Café La Joie is a Mediterranean cafe in the Richmond with coffee, pastries, and smoothies, plus heartier dishes like salads, bagels, and merguez lavash wraps.

Piccino’s second location in the Presidio (in the former Sessions space) has the same seasonal, Cal-Ital dishes as the original in the Dogpatch. Expect housemade pastas, thin-crust pizzas, and a brunch menu with scrambles, bread pudding, and more.

We checked out Piccino and added it to the Hit List.

A 30,000 square foot sports bar has arrived in Thrive City—the massive space has a golf simulator, foosball, basketball arcade games, and it's practically wallpapered with TVs. To go along with cocktails, beer, and wine, there are nachos, fried chicken sandwiches, and pizza.

After six months of renovations, Marina-goers can return to Izzy’s Steaks & Chops for steak au poivre, prime rib ravioli, and (of course) espresso martinis. The refreshed menu also includes seafood dishes, like oysters Rockefeller and halibut with a sourdough crust.

Kura is a chain that has landed in Berkeley, giving the Bay yet another place for plucking nigiri, temaki, and rolls off a conveyor belt.

Tasty Pot in the Richmond has reopened in North Beach. The Taiwanese hot pot spot has individual pots that can be filled with everything from fermented tofu and dumplings to lobster, octopus, and clams.

This international Korean fried chicken chain has arrived in Rockridge. The flavors range from spicy galbi to cheesling to hot mala. Tteokbokki, kimchi fried rice, and onion rings round out the sides.

After a four-year closure, Grumpy’s is back under new ownership. The pub near the Embarcadero still has the same menu (including the legendary burger), with the additions of grandma-style pies and weekend brunch. 

We checked out Grumpy's and added it to the Hit List.

The Old Oakland restaurant formerly known as La Guerrera’s Kitchen is now Las Guerreras, with an expanded space and a new cevichería with five daily ceviches (they still have their old menu of tamales, tacos, and pozole). The seafood additions also include campechana and fish tortas.
